The S16 — GTI in Britain — was the 106 as Peugeot always intended a fast small car to be. A 1.6-litre, 16-valve engine making about 120 hp at 6,600 rpm, 145 Nm at 5,200, rear disc brakes, ventilated fronts, ABS, wider tracks and 15-inch wheels. It is a slightly wider, slightly lower car than any other 106 (1,610 mm across).
It weighed around 925–950 kg and reached 0–62 mph in roughly 8.7 seconds with a top speed near 205 km/h. Those are modest numbers now. What matters is the ratio: about 128 PS per tonne, which is why the S16 still feels quick today.
It ran until the very end of 106 production in 2003, making it the last sports 106 and the one that overlapped the 206 GTI.
