In 1994 the XSi grew a 1.6-litre 8-valve engine with 105 PS. It is faster in the middle of the rev range and slightly slower on paper — 872 kg, a 188 km/h top speed — a more relaxed character than the 1.4's.
It lasted only until the 1996 facelift, when the XSi name was retired and replaced by the sixteen-valve GTI.
