The XSi was the 106's opening statement about performance, listed from the first years of production. A 1.4-litre engine tuned to 100 PS in a car of about 860 kg, with the sportier suspension and trim that separated it from the XT.
It is often remembered as the car the GTI replaced, but it deserves more than being a predecessor: a 100 PS, sub-tonne hatchback is a recognisable heir to the 205 GTI idea, in a smaller body.
